South Africa: More than just Cape Town and Kruger!

They’re the A-list celebrities of South Africa – always hogging the spotlight and stealing the show, but there’s a whole lot more to this vibrant country than just these two headliners.

South Africa is like a blockbuster movie with a killer supporting cast, jaw-dropping scenery, mouth-watering cuisine, and wines that’ll make you question why you ever settled for anything less.

And the cherry on top?

Thanks to our delightfully weak currency, you can live it up without breaking the bank. So let’s dive into the hidden gems and unforgettable experiences that make South Africa the ultimate travel destination:

The Garden Route: Picture this – you’re driving through a landscape so beautiful it feels like you’ve stumbled into a fairy tale. That’s the Garden Route for you. This scenic stretch along the southeastern coast is a nature lover’s paradise.

Stop by Knysna to devour some famous oysters, explore the dramatic cliffs and caves of Tsitsikamma National Park, or lounge on the golden sands of Plettenberg Bay. The region offers a blend of lush forests, serene lakes, and picturesque beaches, making it perfect for hiking, bird watching, and just soaking up the natural beauty.

Adventure seekers can zip-line through the canopy, kayak along the coastline, or take a boat trip to see the playful seals. The best way I can describe visiting the Garden Route is like a spa day for your soul.

Drakensberg Mountains: If you’re into outdoor adventures and stunning views, the Drakensberg Mountains are your playground. These rugged peaks offer some of the best hiking trails in the world, with vistas that will make your Instagram followers green with envy. Trek to the top of the Amphitheatre, a dramatic rock face that towers over the landscape, or explore ancient San rock art sites that tell stories of the area’s first inhabitants.

The Drakensberg is also home to cascading waterfalls, tranquil streams, and unique flora and fauna. Don’t forget to breathe – the views (and the altitude) can take your breath away.

Wild Coast: For those who think “remote” means “paradise,” the Wild Coast is your dream destination. This stretch of coastline in the Eastern Cape boasts dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and traditional Xhosa villages. Disconnect from the Wi-Fi and reconnect with nature and culture. Explore hidden coves, hike along rugged trails, or visit the iconic Hole in the Wall, a natural arch carved by the relentless waves. You’ll encounter friendly locals, vibrant traditions, and perhaps even a wandering cow or two on the beaches.

Panorama Route in Mpumalanga: This scenic drive is a treasure trove of natural wonders. From the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon (the world’s third-largest canyon), to the awe-inspiring views at God’s Window, the Panorama Route offers vistas that will make you question if you’re still on Earth.

Visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes, where centuries of swirling water have carved out intricate rock formations. Don’t forget to check out the dramatic waterfalls like Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls – they’re perfect spots for a picnic or a quick selfie (or twenty). The route is also home to the quaint town of Graskop, where you can indulge in local delicacies like pancakes and explore charming shops and galleries.

Clarens and Golden Gate Highlands National Park: Nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, Clarens is a charming town with an artsy vibe and an abundance of outdoor activities. Known as the “Jewel of the Free State,” Clarens boasts art galleries, craft shops, and cozy cafés.

Just nearby, the Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a haven of stunning sandstone formations and rolling grasslands. The park offers hiking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints, opportunities for game viewing, and the chance to explore the park’s unique geology. It’s the perfect spot for hiking, horseback riding, or simply soaking in the tranquility.

The Karoo: If you’re a fan of wide-open spaces and starry night skies, the Karoo is calling your name. This semi-desert region is known for its unique landscapes, quirky towns, and rich history. Visit the charming town of Prince Albert, with its beautifully preserved Victorian architecture and vibrant arts scene.

Explore the fossil-rich terrain and experience the eerie beauty of the Valley of Desolation, where towering rock formations stand like silent sentinels. The Karoo is also known for its delicious cuisine, especially its famous Karoo lamb, which is said to have a distinct flavor thanks to the region’s unique vegetation.

Midlands in KwaZulu-Natal: The Midlands Meander is a picturesque route that winds through the rolling hills and lush countryside of KwaZulu-Natal. Here, you’ll find artisanal cheese makers, quaint country inns, and charming craft shops. The region is a haven for artists and foodies alike, offering everything from hand-blown glass to homemade preserves.

Visit the Howick Falls, enjoy a leisurely horseback ride, or simply take in the serene beauty of the landscape. Stop by local breweries for a craft beer tasting or indulge in a farm-to-table dining experience. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway.

Overberg Region: This diverse region, which includes the charming town of Hermanus, is known for its incredible whale-watching opportunities. Hermanus offers some of the best land-based whale watching in the world, but the Overberg has even more to offer.

Visit the quaint village of Stanford, where you can enjoy boat trips on the Klein River, taste artisanal cheeses, and explore antique shops. The region also boasts stunning coastal scenery, fynbos-covered hills, and a variety of nature reserves.

Don’t miss the chance to explore the De Hoop Nature Reserve, where you can hike through pristine landscapes and spot a variety of wildlife, including the endangered Cape mountain zebra.

West Coast: If you’re looking for a place where the pace of life is as laid-back as a Sunday afternoon nap, the West Coast is your kind of destination. Explore charming fishing villages like Paternoster, where you can feast on the freshest seafood and experience the local way of life.

Visit the West Coast National Park during spring to see the spectacular wildflower displays, a natural phenomenon that transforms the landscape into a riot of colour.

The region is also home to the Cederberg Mountains, known for their dramatic rock formations, ancient San rock art, and excellent hiking trails.

Wine Country: Sure, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are the celebrity winemakers, but South Africa’s wine scene is like an all-star cast.

Check out the lesser-known vineyards of Swartland, known for its robust red wines and innovative winemakers, Robertson, famous for its Chardonnay and Méthode Cap Classique (South Africa’s answer to Champagne), and Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, renowned for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Each region offers unique wine-tasting experiences, often with views so stunning you might spill your Chardonnay (don’t worry, there’s more where that came from). Enjoy gourmet meals paired with exquisite wines, all while soaking in the stunning vineyard landscapes.

There are so many more destinations across South Africa that we haven’t mentioned, and that’s the point.
